Henry McGowan, who grew up in Greenwich, was charged with the murder of John McGowan, a wealthy New Canaan financier who had flown to Ireland to help his mentally ill son last week, authorities said.

Henry appeared in an Irish court on Monday, Nov. 18, via videoconference, where his attorney said the 30-year-old consented to remain at Cloverhill Remand Prison until at least Dec. 2, when he is scheduled to return to court, the Irish Examiner reported.

His attorney, Barry Fitzgerald, previously told the court that his client was suffering from a significant mental health issue. Henry was undergoing an evaluation and treatment at the jail.

John McGowan, 66, was found dead on Tuesday, Nov. 12, in a common area at Ballyfin Demesne, a hotel in County Laois. Irish officials have not said how he died.

John flew to Ireland the day before his death after he learned his son, who suffers from bipolar disorder, had traveled to the island nation and could be suffering from a mental health episode.

In a statement to The New York Times, the McGowan family said John was a dedicated father who loved his son deeply.

He did everything within his power to bring his son Henry, who suffers from a severe mental illness, the help he so desperately needs. The family requests privacy at this difficult time and will not be commenting further.

John McGowan, a well-known figure in Greenwich and New Canaan, was a managing partner of the venture capital firm Torus Capital in Greenwich.

Henry McGowan, who lived in Brooklyn, New York, with his girlfriend, graduated from the University of Virginia and worked at Affirm, a financial services company.

Ballyfin Demesne is a five-star hotel known for its clientele of the rich and famous.
